Department of Surgery – ESI PGIMSR, Basaidarapur


The Department of Surgery provides tertiary care to surgical patients. Referrals come from other ESI hospitals in Delhi as well as from surrounding states of Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. There are two general wards, one ward for male patients and one for female patients. In addition there is one emergency ward having twelve beds. The wards are air conditioned and equipped with central pipelines for oxygen and suction.

Second floor of the OT complex belongs to the department of surgery. This is a modern, modular, state-of- the-art operation theatre, with four operating tables. In addition , there are two tables in the first floor OT complex, being used for emergency cases.

The department is fully equipped to deal with all surgical emergencies as well as elective cases.


Besides the routine general surgical instruments and equipments, the department has:
Laparoscopic surgery sets: Two HD Sets and one single chip set
Cystoscope/Resectoscope sets: Two
Ultrasonic coagulation device (Harmonic Scalpel): One
Upper GI and Lower GI Endoscopes

Services provided

The department provides outdoor as well as indoor care of a high standard to surgical patients. About 240-250 patients attend the surgery OPD daily. Many of these are referred patients from other hospitals from Delhi or from NCR. The department has facilities for General surgery (emergency and elective) as well as for Minimally Invasive surgery, Urology (including endo-urology), Onco-surgery, GI & Hepato-billiary surgery, Paediatric surgery and Plastic surgery. The department runs three special clinics in the afternoon on every Tuesday and Wednesday, viz., Rectal clinic, GI surgery and Cancer clinic.

Academic activities

Department is a recognised teaching department and running MS (Surg) course. Five Post Graduates students have been allotted by GGS IP University every year.

Regular bedside teaching of students, seminars and clinical case discussions.

Research work done:

  • Triple approach in diagnosis of palpable breast lump: combined clinical breast examination, diagnostic mammography and fine needle aspiration cytology. (Completed)
  • Comparative effects of alfuzosin and nifedipine in the management of lower ureteric calculi. (Completed)
  • Prospective study comparing Prolene Hernia System with Lichtenstein mesh repair in inguinal hernia. (Completed)
  • Assessment of sentinel lymph node mapping using methylene blue dye in early breast cancer with clinically negative axilla.
  • A study of testicular perfusion after Lichtenstein hernioplasty in uncomplicated inguinal hernia.
  • Study of restoration of liver biochemical parameters in patients of surgical obstructive jaundice following biliary decompression and their clinical correlation.
  • Candida isolation from peritoneal fluid: role in outcome in patients of perforation peritonitis.
  • Short Term Outcome of Lichtenstein hernioplasty vs Laparoscopic Trans-Abdominal Pre-peritoneal hernioplasty (TAPP) in uncomplicated unilateral inguinal hernia.

  • A study of correlation of Coagulation markers with clinicopathological stage in operable breast cancer patients as a prognostic factor.

  • Prognostic value of serum C-reactive protein, LDH and GGT levels in the outcome of patients of liver abscess.
  • Evaluation of association of hypothyroidism and gallstones.
  • Evaluation of Hyperbilirubinemia as a diagnostic marker for acute appendicitis and its role in the prediction of appendicular perforation.
  • Evaluation of ligation of inter-sphincteric fistula tract: a sphincter sparing surgery for complex anal fistula.

Participation in Regional and National surgical conferences/CME's

Faculties regularly attend the International,National and Regional Conferences.

Faculties are appointed as external and internal examiner for MBBS and MS (Surgery) at various universities.

Faculties are also reviewer for various national an International journals.

Senior Residents and Post Graduates are regularly presenting research papers in various national and regional conferences.

Future Plans

Department is planning to increase the indoor beds to 160, and running routine operation theatre on six days a week.

Extending the scope of advanced laparoscopic surgery.

Training,Fellowship etc.
